Palringo for iPhone 1.1

August 8th, 2008 – 1:27 PM

We have just sent version 1.1 to Apple for approval, so hopefully you will find the update in the App Store in a few days from now.

Here’s a little breakdown of what’s new and some screenshots for the impatient ones! :)

Vocal Instant Messaging

Finally catching up with the other platforms, you can now SEND short voice messages!

Signing out of IM services

This feature has been frequently requested by our users, and is now part of the new release. It’s possible to sign out of IM services from within the Palringo overview screen.

Improved User Interface

This goes without saying. We’ve revamped our interface making commonly used functionality easier to discover and access.

Other Changes

We’ve been listening to your comments and have made a number of other improvements to the usability and feature set of the Palringo iPhone application.

  • Improved stability and speed
  • Encryption of account details
  • Higher resolution picture messaging (up to 640×640)
  • Support for landscape pictures
  • Does not stop the iPod app from playing on start
  • Support for Internet Links directly from within Palringo, no need to open Safari and get disconnected unless you absolutely have to.
  • Ability to save photos to your photo album

  • Direct access to the FAQ and the Palringo Forums
  • More customisable options!! You can now tailor the user interface and Palringo’s behaviour more to your liking.

As always, keep your feedback coming on the Palringo forums at http://forum.palringo.com!

I’m curious if this new release will have the “@gmail” or “@something.other.than.hotmail.com” problem fixed. The current version isn’t letting me use my @gmail.com account to log-in.

The new version is wonderful! I just wanted to let you all know that often times the text box/hide button above the keyboard disappear within an IM and it prevents you from seeing the rest of the message as well as going back to the home screen without pressing the ‘X’ in the corner. This seems to be the only bug I’ve noticed thus far! Thanks for the awesome app!

Couldn’t you include offline comments, after using windows live messenger it’s a must. And couldn’t i have more control over my contacts groups. If i had these, and obviously for it to be connected all the time, then it would be perfect :D

Hi, I really like the iphone app and I know its a limitation of the SDK to not have apps run in the background but I saw an app MobileChat released on itunes today that will use the new Push technology when Apple flip the switch. This will allow the app to notify you of messages even when the app isnt running. Is this something that Palringo might look at adding? I dont want to change to another app but if MobileChat has this feature then I’ll have no choice as IM is not so useful if you cant get your message’s without having the app open.

Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you,

    Dan.

    Yeah, really looks great!
Is Palringo 1.1 or a future upgrade going to be able to recieve messages and notify while you are using another app, as Apple announced that the tool would ’soon’ be available.
Also, I would really like it is Skype was added, as me and most of my friends use it.

    Great job with Palringo!

It’s great that the Palringo team are actively improving the iPhone application. Kudos.

There are a few things that I miss from Palringo.

    1. OTR – this is a critical function for me. Especialy when I leave my desktop client connected – currently my desktop client automatically negotiates encryption and I receive encrypted messages to Palringo which cannot currently decrypt them.

    2. The ability to switch applications and have Palringo still receive messages. This was apparently going to be able to function using the “Push Technology” that Steve Jobs mentioned in the keynotes so that applications to not need to be in the forground all the time. Is it possible for the Palringo team to investigate this technology and perhaps implement a server side component to Palringo to support background notifcations?

    Keep up the good work.

Very cool about the new update…only problem is after updating Palringo on my iPhone 3G, the application won’t even open. The screen goes black like its loading the application, and then to the home screen again. I’ve tried deleting it off the phone and re-installing. Tried deleting and installing from my desktop through iTunes and still nothing.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi guys! Thanks for your feedback.

Push notifications will be available in the 2.1 firmware Apple is planning to release next month.

Palringo will make use of this functionality as soon as it is available.
